Elizabeth Howland May 28, — December 31, was an American actress. Howland originated the role of Amy in the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim 's Company , in which she introduced the patter song "Getting Married Today". Howland was born on May 28, , in Boston.

Like many of her Alice contemporaries, Beth Howland began her professional career in New York as a Broadway actress and performed in such musical hits as "Company" and "Bye Bye, Birdie. Landing the part and a subsequent second appearance, prompted Beth to move from New York to California and pursue more work in television acting roles. That helped establish her name in Hollywood and lead the path to the future "Alice" series. Growing up as an only child, she describes her early years as fat, lonely and shy. I played Santa Claus in the Christmas play.
She has appeared on stage, television and in film. Beth can be seen dancing and singing in the chorus of Li'l Abner as Clem's wife, alongside future television star Valerie Harper. She remained on Alice throughout its nine seasons. After the sitcom ended in , Howland went into semi-retirement. From to , Howland was married to character actor Michael J. Pollard, with whom she had a daughter. In she married actor Charles Kimbrough, an actor of Broadway and Murphy Brown TV series fame, and remained married to him until her death in Kimbrough and Howland had appeared together in Company. Howland, who had been a smoker since she was a teenager until she finally quit in the early s, died of lung cancer on December 31, , at age
